About the United Way Campaign
United Way of North Central New Mexico (UWNCNM) is a nonprofit charity that serves the people of Bernalillo, Sandoval, Torrance, Valencia, and Santa Fe Counties. Its mission is to connect people to opportunities and services to equitably improve lives and strengthen communities. To do so, United Way works to rally community support, provide comprehensive resources, and raise funds to increase family stability and educational attainment.
The University of New Mexico (UNM) has been a proud supporter of UWNCNM for over 30 years, where our participation in the campaign goes far beyond the annual UNM Gives initiative: many faculty, staff, and students donate and volunteer year-round with United Way. Key programs include the 211 Helpline, Ride United, Tax Help NM, Laundry Love, and Family Advocacy Center, all providing essential support to community members.
$5 a day – Support updates to the 211 Helpline database to provide callers in need with resources.
$10 a week - Allows the Family Advocacy Center (FAC) to provide a week's worth of hotel vouchers for two families to leave violent homes.
$15 a paycheck – Sponsors 80 students to participate in career/college readiness activities: resume writing workshops, mock interviews and career fairs.
“211 is an information and referral helpline that connects callers to assistance regarding rent, utility help, tax help, unhoused vouchers, and shelters.
Progressively, 211 calls increased by 107% from 2022 to 2023, and by 80% in 2024, answering over 19,000 calls.”
“Ride United provides free transportation in Santa Fe County for people to access critical services, such as doctor appointments or a job interview.
Ride United provided nearly 2,800 rides in 2024, mainly for health/medical needs (83%) and food access (13%), serving 26% seniors.”
“United Tax Help offers free tax preparation services to New Mexico households with an annual income of $67,000 or less. The program relies on 190 volunteer tax preparers who work at 23 regional sites. In 2024, they completed 9,433 returns, resulting in $16.2 million in refunds/credits returned to New Mexicans, which allows families to build their financial stability and contributes to New Mexico’s economy.”
“Laundry Love offers free monthly laundry sessions to families who are struggling financially. With a washer load at a laundromat averaging $8, and the increased cost of detergent, the financial burden can be difficult. Access to clean clothes provides people with dignity and improves children's school attendance.
Just this past 2024, Laundry Love served 310 families, providing 1,825 washer loads and 3,650 dryer loads, valued at $27,000.”
“In the Albuquerque metro area, approximately 80,000 women and 30,000 men are victims of domestic violence each year. Last year alone, the Family Advocacy Center served over 5,900 victims of domestic violence, with clients ranging from 2 months-old to 89 years”
